The health status of the chicken flocks is monitored on a daily basis, using a number of key parameters. One of the most important aspects is the condition of the straw/peat/wood shavings bedding on the floor in the chicken house, which is indicated by the foot health of the chickens.
If the straw bedding is not dry enough, this shows as visible marks on the foot pads. Foot pad condition is measured and registered for each chicken flock at the slaughterhouse.
Today a random sample of 100 foot pads is studied for each flock. The result is registered and is included in our evaluation of the contracted farmer, having a direct impact on the payment.
Good foot health also means we can increase the proportion of high quality chicken feet qualified for export as food to Asia, which is more profitable than selling them for animal feed.
